For the first time, an Egyptian University within the top 100 universities worldwide for achieving SDGs

Prof. Khaled Abdul Ghaffar-Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research reviewed a report submitted by Dr. Ayman Ashour-Deputy Minister for University Affairs about the rankings of the Egyptian Universities in the Time International Classification according to its achieving the goals of the United States for the Sustainable Development for 2021 which its number 17 goals.

The report indicated to the raising of the Egyptian Universities number that is inserted in the British Times Classification according to achieving the sustainable development goals of this year for (31) Egyptian Universities compare to (16) university in 2019, and (23) university in 2020, while Aswan University ranked 95th in the world according to achieving the sustainable development goals, and the1st at the level of the Egyptian Universities among the top 100 universities in the world in 2021, compare to the last year in which no Egyptian University appeared including (Aswan University) among the 100 universities, followed by Cairo University in the 201-300 rank, followed by Alexandria and Kafr el-sheik universities in the 301-400 rank.

The report showed the achieving of (8) Egyptian universities ranked from (401-600) (Ain Shams, Assiut, Benha, Mansoura, the Egyptian-Japanese University of Science and Technology, Pharos, Suez Canal, and Tanta). The report added the raising of the number of the classified Egyptian Universities within the top 400 universities in the world in (10) sustainable development goals, where more than (20) universities were classified in the several of the sustainable development goals; some Egyptian Universities topped in the sustainable development goals as the following:

Cairo University ranked the 95th of this for achieving the 1st goal which is Ending Poverty, also the Cairo University ranked the 45th in the world in achieving the 7th goal which is ensuring affordable clean energy, Cairo University ranked the 90th in the world in achieving the 10th goal reducing inequalities.

– Aswan University ranked the 8th in the world about achieving the 2nd goal which is Zero Hunger, also Aswan University ranked 201-300 in the world about achieving the 3rd goal for ensuring healthy lives and well-being, Aswan University ranked 201-300 in achieving the 5th goal which is Gender Equality; also Aswan University ranked the31st in the world about achieving the 11th goal which is making cities and human settlements; also Aswan University ranked the 33rd goal which is Partnerships for the Goals.

Alexandria University ranked the 83rd  in the world about achieving the 4th goal, ensuring Quality Education, Alexandria University ranked 101-200 to achieve the 16th goal: promoting Peace, Justice, and Effective Institutions.

Kafr el-sheik University ranked the 91st in the world about achieving the 6th goal: Clean Water and Sanitation for all.

Pharos University topped up 101-200 to achieve the 8th goal: Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Mansoura University was ranked 101-200 globally for achieving the 9th goal: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

Kafr El-Sheikh University ranked 101-200 globally in achieving the twelfth goal of responsible consumption and production, and Kafr El-Sheikh University ranked 39th in the world in achieving the 30thgoal: Climate Action.

Benha University ranked 101-200 in the world in achieving the fourteenth goals, which is living underwater, and the15th: Life on Land.

The report pointed out that the British Times classification is considered one of the most important indicators for the impact of Higher Education in different countries in the world, and they are the only performance indicators that evaluate universities according to the United Nation-States for the Sustainable Development Goals.

Also, this classification was inserted in general for universities in the world to include only (786) universities in 2020 compared to (1115) universities in 2021 in addition to that the sustainable development goals in these fields one of the important activities of the Egyptian Universities a ration as the global university, also the British Times classification points out the importance of setting the Egyptian Universities their plans generally in a form parallel to SDGs.

The report added the strategy of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research for improving the universities’ classification globally includes:

1-Preparing research for researches in Egyptian Universities.

2-Working on clean plans for learning and education outcomes ensures the quality of learning and the continuation of the learning lately.

3-The role that is the universities must play not only for maintaining the material resources but also the administrative apparatus, academic staff, and students, while the ministry considers the universities’ affiliates participants in the developmental plans.

4-The place, the educational environment, and the international position are considered an important matter in the Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Egyptian Universities, plus the role of the universities in serving the community.
